Do cultural Christians view Christian faith as important enough to make it a priority when teaching their children what they believe and why they believe it? Or do they place greater emphasis on their children getting a good education than on learning about the things of God? Would they be embarrassed if their children did not possess the former while basically being indifferent about the latter? If their children have any understanding of Christian faith at all, they probably have acquired it on their own. I hope you don’t think I am being arrogant or overly harsh on cultural Christians. You might know some of the basic facts about Christianity but have no idea how those facts should apply to your life. You might understand the Christianity our culture has adopted without understanding what constitutes authentic faith. The fact is, you might not be a Christian at all but simply a moral person. You might think that if you consider yourself a good person and are against bad things, your faith is adequate. CHAPTER ONE THE STATE OF CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIANITY Cultural Christianity, What the Bible Says, the Problem of Ignoranceīefore looking at the specific problems posed by what I am from here forward going to call cultural Christianity, I would like to address the problem of the faulty ideas many people have regarding the importance of authentic faith. Most of the essays, however, chronicle expatriate life in England, France and Japan with his long-suffering and improbably talented boyfriend Hugh. The author still draws from the well of familial tragicomedy in pieces that dissect his parents’ taste in modern art (“Adult Figures Charging Toward a Concrete Toadstool”) and their reactions to what he wrote about them in his first book (“fifty pages later, they were boarding up the door and looking for ways to disguise themselves”). The author’s faithful fans probably won’t be turned off by his copyright-page admission that these pieces, most seen before in the New Yorker, are only “realish.” They feel real, whether Sedaris is revealing his troubling obsession with a certain species of spider or describing a lift from a tow-truck driver who kept saying things like, “yes, indeedy, a little oral give-and-take would feel pretty good right about now”-the ring of truth adds to the book’s horrified-laughter factor. Older, wiser, smarter and meaner, Sedaris ( Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, 2004, etc.) defies the odds once again by delivering an intelligent take on the banalities of an absurd life. Within the valuation industry, the three approaches to valuing a business are: the asset, income and market approaches. Approaches to Valuation for Wealth Management Firms The longevity and predictability of those assets are difficult to ascertain – and, in many cases, firms do not have legal rights to those assets except for those cases in which employment agreements have been signed. Business is typically based on close personal contacts, mutual trust and the collective reputation of the firm and its key professionals. The major driver of value is a “two legged” asset that goes home every night, the human capital. Tangible assets are negligible among wealth management firms. As such, the valuations of wealth management firms present a number of special considerations. These firms come in many shapes and sizes, and vary widely in terms of the key components that drive value. Wealth management firms are brimming with talent, brain power, energy and most importantly, revenue-generating capacity. To give you a taste of the new perceptions that Kinnaman and Lyons argue for, let’s look at the perception that Christians are hypocritical or “say one thing but live something entirely different.” A new perception the authors offer for Christians to cultivate is that “Christians are transparent about their flaws and act first, talk second.” They believe that in many ways the outsiders are accurate in their observations and that this new perception is really more Christian. To that end they present six perceptions these young adults have of Christians gained not so much from the media but from personal relationships and experience with Christians and six corresponding new perceptions that Christians should work to foster. Kinnaman and Lyons are clear throughout the whole book that the point of this research is not to figure out what 16-29 year-olds want and give it to them, but rather to listen to their perspective and learn from it. These outsiders view Christians as, well, unchristian. The book is based on representative polling and interviews done with 16-29 years-olds (referred to by demographers as “older Mosaics” and “younger Busters”) who are outside the church (“outsiders”) on how they view Christians. OK, maybe that’s a little aggressive, but their book unchristian is hard to ignore. Unchristian by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyonsĭavid Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons give the church a much needed kick in the gut. The net effect is a forensic fictionalisation of economic bankruptcy in the docks and trade unions, corruption and bureaucratic degeneracy in municipal politics, chaotically incompetent and helpless leadership in the police department and school system, and comparably cynical sociopathic management in local media and drug-dealing franchises.Įarly-90s West Baltimore sees another teenage gangbanger murdered and, as we encounter his peers and police investigators, the suspected ‘corner-boss’ culprit wriggles free after witness intimidation. The self-defeatingly stupid but electorally compelling ‘War on Drugs’ focuses the five seasons’ test-case of the dysfunctional amorality of postmodern government – subsequent narratives expanding these narrowly-delineated parallel micro-worlds into the contemporary social complexity of a tragically ailing urban America and the terminally failing institutions nominally charged with its welfare. “A political tract masquerading as a cop show”, the first season introduces central characters and situations in the inner-city narcotics trade and its policing in Baltimore, Maryland – or in local street argot ‘Body-More, Murdaland – intended to represent any decaying second-tier rust-belt metropolis. Widely acclaimed as the best television ever, US crime saga The Wire finally arrives on freeview here, continuing on BBC 2 into the summer. Meanwhile, Sammish’s unrequited love for Alys forces her to confront the dark currents that threaten to sweep up Alys in their wake. This leads her down a dangerous path, putting her in the employ of a man and a woman from Green Hill-the richest district-and stretching her morals to their limits. After Alys’s brother Darro dies mysteriously, Alys vows to discover who killed him and why. They grew up in Longhill, the poorest district. Alys and Sammish both fall into this category. Ruled by a prince (the term is gender neutral in Kithamar), the city has its share of the poor and disadvantaged. It was a meeting place, though now the two major ethnicities live mostly peaceably side by side. Thanks to NetGalley and Orbit for the eARC! I would say that this book mostly delivers, though I could see how there is room for disappointment depending on the type of expectations one goes in with. Abraham sets us up to expect heists, recrimination, and plenty of intrigue. For now, though, let’s talk about Age of Ash.
